Our Story

mr. montanez Fidel's Little Mexico has been a San Diego landmark since the early '60s when owner Fidel Montanez came up with the idea to serve tacos at his busy barber shop.

The shop was located in the heart of Eden Gardens, a small neighborhood in Solana Beach that was home to a number of Mexican families. The tacos sold like hotcakes, and before long, the place evolved into a neighborhood family restaurant.

The business thrived and expanded as Fidel converted his two-story residence into three different levels, including a festive courtyard, a couple of bars, outdoor patios, and a taco bar.

Today, Fidel's ranks among the top restaurants in San Diego County. Happy hour is offered five days a week in the large upstairs bar. Fidel's menu offers traditional favorites as well as house specialties that will transport you and your party South of the Border.


Mark Montanez

Mark Montanez was born on December 14, 1957, to Fidel and Martha Montanez in Oceanside, California. He grew up in Eden Gardens, a small neighborhood in Solana Beach known for its close-knit Mexican community. From an early age, Mark was involved in the family business, which started as a simple taco stand in his father's barber shop.

As the business expanded, so did Mark's responsibilities. Fidel's Little Mexico thrived and evolved into a beloved neighborhood family restaurant, featuring a festive courtyard, multiple bars, outdoor patios, and a popular taco bar. Mark's dedication and hard work were instrumental in these expansions.

Mark’s passion for the restaurant business was matched by his love for the community. He was known for his friendly demeanor and exceptional service, ensuring that Fidel's Little Mexico remained a top destination for authentic Mexican cuisine in San Diego County. Today, the restaurant continues to offer traditional favorites and house specialties that transport patrons South of the Border.

Mark Anthony Montanez lived a life filled with love, passion, and dedication. He was an alumnus of Torrey Pines High School and College of the Redwoods in Fields Landing. Mark enjoyed surfing, golfing, and sports, especially being a lifelong 49ers fan.

Mark was a sentimental and thoughtful writer, often sharing heartfelt notes and poems with friends and family. His philosophy of life was well captured in the motto “Wine, Women & Song.” He loved the beach and everything about it, earning the nickname "Markie Couples" for his smooth golfing swing.

After venturing out to continue the family business in the Columbia River Gorge and opening his own restaurant "The Crazy Pepper" in Hood River, Oregon, Mark ultimately returned to Eden Gardens to care for his father, Fidel Sr., and manage Fidel's Little Mexico.

Mark’s legacy is one of kindness, love, and community. He was a friend to all and beloved by many. The memories he created and the impact he had on those around him will be cherished forever. Mark's contributions to Fidel's Little Mexico ensured that the restaurant remained a beloved community landmark, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere to all who visited.
